We are a union state. Some are AFT (American Federation of Teachers) and others are NEA (I don't remember what that stands for) but both groups are pretty strong. The union in the city I work for is quite strong and I am honored to be a part of it. It's unfortunate that we all don't have the same rights for the same job. We all should. Teaching is hard enough, you need support when things get tough.
