I'm most likely in the minority but...

Clip to ScrapBook
I cannot pack up until the kids are gone. I HATE an empty room. I want them to remember our classroom full of learning and charts and books and other great stuff - not an empty shell (not that anyone here does that).

I do have colleagues who pack up about 2 weeks prior to the last day.

And I've tried that "good bye" thing with them. Every day saying good bye to something and it was a complete nightmare. First graders have issues with separation and change to begin with, add this element and forget it.

So in the end, I spend one or two weeks after the last day packing up my room.

Our last week, I do have them help me organize things for me, though. We go through our library making sure all books are in their proper baskets. We play all our reading and math games to ensure all the pieces are there. We do all our puzzles for the same reason. And each day during that last week I have them bring home something from their desks (as well as reading group and writing folders) and on the last day bring home pencil boxes.

That is about all my kids can handle. And honestly, it is all I can handle.

That's just me.
