Every 2 yrs. universities in our state (and probably others) nominate new teachers who are in their first year or second year as an Outstanding Beginning Teacher, based on reports back to the university from other teachers,
principals, and observations. The nominees are submitted to the state School Board Association, which presents the award.

I was a recipient of the Outstanding Beginning Teacher Award in 2007. I had no idea the award even existed so I was floored when I was notified. We got a trip to the state capital for awards luncheon and presentations and a lovely crystal apple on an

engraved base. For me, it helped validate that I was doing some things right and that my former university and current administration noticed. Of all the 1st, 2nd year teachers out there, I was one of 65 who received the award in our state. It was most special because I wasn't aware of the award so it wasn't like I was "trying" to win something. Sometimes I see teachers who get nominated for local awards or whatever and you almost know it's because they have a good friend/parent that has nominated or something. That's not always the case, of course, but it happens. My students think the award is pretty cool. My class (from last year) made cards and threw a mini-party for me the day after I got back from the award ceremony. It was special. :)
