homework research By Bertie

On the news this week there was a researcher who's work seems to indicate most homework has little or no effect on a child's progress. Especially, they mention homework should not be assigned just for tradition - for homework's sake. It should be directly related to today's school work, and be able to be done independently. Math homework was suggested as particularly ineffective as the good students didn't need it and the poor ones didn't do it. Exception - in Middle School, where some review was shown to bring marks up.
A large Canadian school district is now discussing mandating that Elementary | | students are to only get reading homework (none for K). Math was added at Jr High. And for high school maximum 1 -2 hours total. Interesting, I think we'll be hearing more about this.
