Clip to ScrapBook
Ruby Payne is an amazing author on the subject of poverty. Her book "A Framework for Understanding Poverty" is a must read for teachers working with students living in poverty. She explains things in everyday language and
she puts you in the middle of what it is like to live in poverty. Something I found very interesting is her discussions on "hidden" language for the different classes of society. Most teachers speak the "middle class" language and have a difficult time understanding the language of poverty.

My school sends all the teachers to a Ruby Payne workshop during our beg of the year
training and I've always found it to contain extremely helpful information.

check out http://www.ahaprocess.com/ for more info on her books & workshops

remember the most important thing is that you show them you care! your love for kids will shine through & they'll see that.
You need to be firm - state your expectations right away and stick with them - but that's no different than other schools.

I wouldn't worry about it - just be yourself & love on the kids!

BTW - another GREAT author is Jonothan Kozol. his books are wonderful treasure chests of knowledge & of his experiences in low-income schools - another must read! :)
