I teach Title I reading, and the only kids I get are the ones below grade level. Some are there because of family life, some because of cognitive challenges, and some because they decided to hate reading. I do all that the
above posters wrote about. One key in my teaching is the ability to quickly diagnose what is holding back a child, and give him the tools to get over it. I also establish respectful, fun and loving relationships with all my kids. This gives them a good feeling about coming to my room in the first place, and helps them transfer that good feeling to reading, especially when I put an awesome
book in front of them. I can't tell you what it's like to see a struggling reader turn into a book devourer. In fact, I have to call a mom this week to let her know her son became one. :D (as if she didn't already know by now!)
