Alabama does have a union. The Alabama Education Association (AEA). I feel blessed to know that I am backed. ALso, in the 10 years that I have been teaching our union has fought very hard for our raises to get our pay more along national average. We now get $425 to spend in our classrooms each year where as when I first started we were lucky to see $80 or 90. There is surely a way to change this in the states that do not have a union. I would start talking to people and see what can be done.
