I teach 3rd grade.

So far I've used Test Talk (TT), Reading with Meaning (RWM), Comprehension Connection: bridges to strategic reading (CC).

I am planning on using The Art of Teaching Reading & A Teacher's
Guide to Standardized Test by Lucy Calkins, Strategies that Work, & Mosaic of Thought.

I also just bought 7 keys to comprehension but have not received it in the mail.

I would like to know if it would be too difficult to send students off to do their own mental file folders during the time that I ask them to; They would have to truly understand that they must activate

their mental file to ask themselves questions and figure out what the text is going to be about. I am considering choosing the books that they use that day- my goal is for them to try out the strategy on their own to begin to internalize its use & purpose. I am afraid that I will send them on their own to try it and they will fail because of their choice of book.
