Yes! I stop to chart while reading aloud during a mini-lesson in Reading Workshop but not during read-aloud at other times. The reason I would stop to chart is when focusing on a comprehension strategy. Other reading strategies
such as problem/solution, sequencing events, cause/effect, etc. can be charted after reading. The comprehension strategies are strategies we use while reading, therefore are charted while reading. It does not break the flow of the book/strategy discussion...it adds to their understanding. We may have to take more than one sitting to get through a book, but my kids remember these stories
in great detail and our thinking is displayed on the charts that we've completed together. The whole focus is to encourage thinking while reading.
