really liked Cathy Dee's suggestion

Clip to ScrapBook
Cathy gives a great suggestion. Once I taught a substitute lesson that became an actual lesson on the dynamics of Dawson's Creek v. Buffy, Angel, and Popular. We talked about characters, the lack of Af-Am characters, round/dynamic
& flat/static, setting, exposition, etc... I mentioned how I like to watch these programs and sometimes tape them because.... I also like football and always look at the front page of the newspaper for sports news and comment to the students who like sports. Sometimes I read from them from teen magazines and the newspaper. I talk about their goals, what they want to do when
they get older. I tell them about my travels and travails. If the class is that out of whack, I start with only a couple of students and move forward. Suddenly, most of the students want to join.

Good luck working with middle school...they're crazy.
