I can give you some information about RTI for reading. I am no expert, but I have been to several workshops and can tell you what my district is doing next year. This year has been mostly spent organizing for next year.| The first concept my district adopted was that reading is most important over everything else. To begin with, all students will be in the regular classroom for 90 minutes of reading next year. (K-6) Within the regular classroom the teachers will be using guided reading and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of the students. All students will be tested with the DIBELS fluency | | test. Anyone that scores within the some risk or at risk range or doesn’t meet standards on our state test will be referred for 30 minutes additional reading a day. This reading will be done by a reading interventionist. Additional testing will then be done to find out the students areas of weakness. They will work intensively with the student on these areas using scientifically research-based interventions. The student will then be given the DIBELS test about every two weeks to monitor progress. Then after about 6 weeks, the problem solving team will meet on the student to see how they are responding to the interventions. The team will then decide whether to continue with the current intervention or change. Our district is going with a flexible service deliver system. This means that students can go to anyone for an intervention. This includes the special education teacher. This system will then be used to help identify students who are eligible for sp. ed. If the student doesn’t respond to documented interventions then they could qualify. Tier 1 is the regular classroom with some adaptations and interventions. When these interventions don’t work the student goes to tier 2 which is the reading interventionist. Tier 3 could be the sp. ed. teacher or the reading interventionist. This process is open to many variations. This is the way that my district is interpreting the information from my state. In Illinois this spring each district has to have a self assessment on RTI done and by January 1, 2009 we are required to have a district plan. By the 2010-2011 school year, documentation of the RTI process shall be part of the evaluation process for students with LD. I am sorry this is so long, but I hope it helps a little.
