with the other posters about picking your battles but I have had some success with the "tongue filter" discussion with my 4th graders. We have to learn to use our tongue filters in life. It the mechanism that thinks before
we speak. We must be able to run our spoken language thru the filter and make sure that we won't get in trouble for what we say, or offend anyone within listening range. Darnit is a slang for another d word, and I am offended by that word, so therefore I am offended by the slang as well. I am pretty direct when I explain this to my students. I have many students that use to say "What
