subbing crazy kids in ms By Carolyn

Get the heck out of subbing in middle school. I did it for awhile and I hated every minute of it. The kids at that age think of subs the way big white sharks think of their prey: They go viciously after them, attack, then| tear them to pieces. Of course, when that middle school you have been working for doesn't have any more subs, maybe they will come to the realization as to the reason. Nobody wants to work there because of the behavior of the kids. I also taught full-time in a "nice" middle school in Charlotte. I suffered this "jail term" for a full year. By February, I had to take two days | | off in a row, because I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I tell you that even though I had these kids every day I felt like prey. They had no respect for rules from anyone. They would come into my room at class changes and do every obnoxious thing imaginable. They'd kick the wire on my overhead machine to unplug it. They'd steal my overhead transparency so that I couldn't use it. They'd stick paper in the overhead vent. They steal things from my desk when I wasn't looking. They'd erase the markerboard. (I ended up having to use vis-a-vis transparency markers that they couldn't "accidentally" erase when they walked by the board. I did this until they realized that they could make a mess of my work on the board by smearing wet fingers across it.) Honestly, for the life of me, I can't understand how they can find full-time middle school teachers, let alone substitutes!
