derogatory terms
By EarthMonkey

Clip to ScrapBook
I have a hard time understanding why any one would not stop words being used in a derogatory manner. If the children were using nigger, honkey, mick, wop, dego, jap, retard, ho, cripple, wasp, et... in a rude phrase, you
wouldn't beat around the bush you would say that is derogatory, you are insulting a group of people, stop it now. How can you question whether it is ok to be rude to one group of people and not another. If you say it is ok to be rude to one group you are saying it is ok to be rude to all. It doesn't matter what group you are giving permission to be derogatory towards. By doing that you
are creating a bullying atmosphere in your classroom and school. The child or thing who is being called gay may or may not be, but why should their feelings be diminished by their teacher's personal fears or predjudices? If you think children don't know what gay means; you are naive. Whether you like homosexuality or not you need to think about the long term effects of your actions on the children you teach.

To purposefully choose to not include a group that is part of our society is neglectful in teaching children about the society around them.
