Teachers seem to be responsible for most everything to do with their students these days. Why is it our responsiblity to teach them respect for others, to tie their shoes, say please and thank you, and be sure that the kids do their homework (note the word "home")? Parents used to raise their own children and took joy in teaching them small accomplishments like shoe-tying and good manners. I am responsible in the classroom for things that my own children learned from me while DH was traveling for work. I am expected to keep my students from bullying others. Of course I will address it when I know | | it is happening! But are the parents doing the same? Instead, they complain - in front of the kids - and the students come to school with little respect for school personnel. One child in my current class shows up an hour or more late once or twice a week because mom wants to play dolls with her, watch a video, make a second breakfast... (mom works, must have flex hours). This girl told me that I am not a real teacher because I teach kindergarten. I asked why she thinks that. It appears mommy said it to daddy. And I know that if this girl is not ready for first grade it will all come back on me. Ugh!
