Principal's Math Club By Lodi 3rd

A couple years ago, when we got a new administrator:D , she started the Principal's Math Club. Our school has 300 kids, I mention this because the principal corrects the 1 minute quizzes for all the students! More importantly| the quizzes are run off by the principal in two sets; the take home and practice for next week set- sent home Friday and due Monday and then the set of quiz sheets for the week. Each grade determined where/what level they needed to work on. 1st did + facts, 2nd did +/- facts in the fall semester and x's facts in spring, 3rd-5th worked on x and divide facts and 6th did decimals and fractions. | | For 30 school days or one month depending on how the principal wanted it to run the students did a daily 1 minute timed test. If they earned 90% or higher their name was placed in a raffle box. Each test had 2 name lines. The corrected tests were returned to the students. For each completed homework packet of 5 practice quizzes, identical to the one for the following week, their name would be but in a separate drawing box if the papers were returned Monday mornings. At the end of the month 1-3 and 4-6 met in the cafeteria for the drawing. Prizes started simple with pencils, folders, hacky sacks, frisbees, crayons, jump ropes, toy cars all the way up to board games, footballs, soccer balls etc. The grand prize for the homework draw was a cd player/boom box. The homework drawing was first and those names left are put into the other drawing box. The kids LOVE IT!! The prizes are paid with student accounts--money raised from the drink machine, student store sales. Our basic fact knowledge and skill has improved tremendously. The Principal's Math Club usually takes place in the 2nd and 3rd quarter of the year.:s)
