Clip to ScrapBook
Our school has received training on CGI in phases over the last several years. I am on my second year. I really enjoy implementing it in my 5/6 year old class but it has taken a lot of trial and error. I thankfully have a lot of support so we learn together. You generally pose a meaningful story problem to the students (I have 6 markers and I found 3 more - how many markers do I have now?) and then you help students move from direct modeling (actually laying out the markers to discover the answers) to derived facts and known facts (soon they will know 6+3 is 9 and why - I know 5 and 5 is ten). And then you move on to bigger numbers. This is a WAY, WAY simplified explanation but I really to believe the thought process is valuable.
