A REALLY bad day...
By J.L.

Clip to ScrapBook
Shawn,

I am sorry to hear that you had such a bad day. I am not a sub right now, although I have been before. It's such a hard, thankless job. Right now I am a SPED teacher, and have pretty much the same feelings. I went
into special education because I wanted to be an advocate for kids with problems...I went into this with the best intentions, and now I am getting out while I still have a bit of sanity left. Somewhere, the ideaology I had of helping ALL students got covered up with unsupportive administrators, rotten parents, and being blamed for every dang thing happens. I still believe, with all my
heart, that inclusion is wonderful, when used APPROPRIATLY!!!!!! Some kids just DO NOT belong in a public school setting, I don't care what anyone says. For inclusion to work, a school needs to get their head's outta their rear ends, and start taking some positive measures...like an on site behavior specailist on duty ALL DAY to help with the kids when they bonker out. They need to support anyone who is willing to work with these kids, whether its subs, sped teachers, or aids.

What happened to you just plain sucks. I can't believe you didn't get a call back to that school!!! Jesus!! What did they want you to do, the kids were chucking eggs left and right??!!! What a bunch of idiot administrators must be running that school. You said someone reported you...what was that all about? Did the sub coordinator tell you WHAT (specifically) you were reported for??!!! Do you know the regular education teacher for that room? Can they tell you what might have warrented being suspended for a week? Ack...well, in any event, I am sorry that you lost $300.00 bucks...that really bites.

I see everyday how the SPED system is messed up. I have been a SPED teacher for little under and year, and swear to God I will leave teaching before I take another SPED job. It isn't even the kids so much...and I have a dousy of a child who physically, verbally, and sexually abuses me almost on a daily basis. Even still, I love working with my other students, who at the best of times, can be a handful. What really gets me is the lack of support from administration. If for one damn minute they would listen, offer advice, or just some SUPPORT, I think I wouldn't be leaving SPED. I still believe in the philosophy of it all...just not the BS that seems to seap from every aspect of it. Schools only do a half-a** attempt at giving staff, even the kids, what they really need. And it does need to be stated that not all kids should be in a regular school setting. IT IS JUST NOT APPROPRIATE FOR EVERYONE!!! While I know that some kids can't help the things they do, much to many teacher's disbelief of that, I just can't take it.

Last, but not least, just how the heck did the adminstration WANT you do deal with this crap???!!! What a joke!
