This website http://www.homeschoolshare.com/butterfly__patricia_polacco.php
had ideas for using it. Down towards the bottom of the page, they mentioned the symbolism of the butterfly. They suggested that each child create
a symbol of their home and family, similarly to the way the butterfly represented that in the book. If you want to stick to the butterfly, you could make a large butterfly pattern on drawing paper and have the kids fill the wings with symbols that represent their own lives and families. www.patriciapolacco.com has an interesting piece about the book itself. Finally, I love the book Number
the Stars by Lois Lowry. It's the story of a girl living in Denmark when Hitler's forces come to take over the government. She and her family smuggle her best friend out of the country. It is a wonderful story that captures the time of history very appropriately for your age group. I miss teaching 4th and 5th graders!
