i do Teams Tournament---divide up kids (some high, some low, etc) into teams. then i have made several SMARTBoard slides (i have some for math and reading and language---all subcategories (geometry, number sense, measurement.....punctuation,
capitals, sentence structure.....evaluative reading, literal comprehension, literary analysis....) i start with the first team, they get so much time to answer correctly, if not correct, go to next team and on--team with most points wins--(we combine our 2 6th grades for this) and we give really good prizes--like a candy bar, toy, and pen. they really enjoy it!

our
Title One department has done an awesome job buying TONS of board games (Lakeshore is one we have a lot of) that are fun and focus on specific skills (synonyms, context clues, main idea, predicting...)

ABC (i've given it a "cool" name but can't think of it now) basically, it's alphaboxes. the kids list everything that goes with the topic for each letter---BUT they have to explain it...
so in math, A could be algebra (solving for unknown variables), acute (an angle less than 90 degrees or a triangle with all 3 angles measuring less than 90 degrees)

Snowball Fight! (we do a huge one with our math vocabulary) we type up all our math terms and then have all the definitions/examples---we print on recycled paper.... give each kid a sheet--they have to crumple it up and then they throw them at each other (snowball fight) i like to do this outside! and when i blow the whistle, they stop, find a sheet open it and find their partner--we sit in a circle and then share both. (we have to do it about 4 or 5 times to get through all!)
