First of all, how many students do you let go to the bathroom at one time??? If I have one student out and another one asks, I just say, "I already have somebody out." or "When Joe comes back." It works wonders.

As
for the noise level, it's one of those ugly civil rights things. Your class has a right to hear the movie; my class has the a right to peace and quiet to do its work. I have no problem asking politely if we can work out a compromise. The teacher is not a coward. If he left the room himself, then HIS kids would be jumping out the window.

Once in college, I was taking a test and a

construction crew was tearing up the sidewalk outside. The professor went out and asked them to stop digging! I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dr. Shen.
