Compensating for an ADHD Student
By Angel Star

Clip to ScrapBook
Wow! There are a lot of intelligent and experienced teachers on this site. I would agree with all of the strategies listed above. I feel for you and completely understand your predicament. I just hope that this doesn't inhibit
you from loving all that second grade can offer!

One thing I would like to point out to you is that you MUST remember your other students. It is so easy to focus all of your attention on this one child, thinking to yourself, "Well, I can't let him fail. If I did, I wouldn't be doing my job". I've said these exact words before and not until this year did I realize that in my
attempt to reach this one child, I wasn't doing all that I could for the others.

I realize that his actions are distracting, not only for the class, but for you personally. Do all that you can do remove him, but make him feel that it is in his best interest. You don't want to punish him, because his actions are not entirely in his control.

Hang in there. Keep notes of your observations as well as your attempts to strategize the situation.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
