You Are Me!! By MrsM79

I can completely relate, I have a second grade boy who is almost identical, if not a bit worse, that your student. Mine also likes to intentionally distract others, roll on the floor, can't keep his shoes on, etc, etc, etc.| There have been days that I have left school ready to cry, wondering what more I could possibly be doing to help this child be successful...mom has finally gotten on the ball and he is on medication, which hasn't proven very helpful for him. Some of the things that I have tried that have worked with him, are: having a space very close to me where he can work, this has helped him on | | occasion. For some reason he seems to sometimes actually get something done if I am close enough to be able to just even tap a finger on his paper to bring him back to it...I have also had him work to a timer. For example, our practice books that go with our reading series, have no more than say 15 questions on a side of a paper. I'll star between 5 and 7, then set the timer for 5 minutes. He knows that he needs to do them before the timer goes off. When it goes off, he gets to set it again, but for 5 minutes with a Highlights magazine of his choice, he loves them! :) Then, it gets set again, back to work, and so on...now don't get me wrong, this doesn't always work, it's very inconsistent with him, just a trick that sometimes will pull him in enough to get him to do something. It's very hard to feel like you are doing your job when you can clearly see a student that is not progressing and having any success. This is the boat that I am in. I have gotten to the point however, that I realize that I have 23 other students that also need me just as much. Sometimes I really have to pull myself back and let him play with the lint on his shirt because I would not be doing my job if not seeing to the other students in my class...hope this helps make you feel a little better...YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!
