literacy first
By corinthteache

Clip to ScrapBook
I worked at a school in NC that implemented the Literacy First program three years ago. It does take an excruciatingly long time and hard work to get it together. The training was very time consuming and extensive. The
program is very data oriented and you spend a great deal of time assessing the students. It seemed endless. You have a very rigid schedule and someone was in our rooms daily observing us. Writing is not a part of the program. The literacy block is lengthy and very little time is left for math, writing, science, etc. Three days a week we did flex groups with phonics lessons and only
had 2 days per week for guided reading. We were not allowed to use basals. Also, it is a huge financial undertaking. It is a very expensive program. On the positive side for Literacy First, I did learn some valuable teaching methods and ideas that I have carried with me to my new school.
