It's so refreshing....

to hear your views on the testing debate! I teach with an entire school of "the test is the END-ALL and we must practice, practice, practice" types. Many days, I think I'm the only one that sees the damage this type of teaching
is doing to our students!! So many teachers are giving their students little bits of EVERYTHING and not MASTERING anything!! All for the sake of those test scores! Isn't it sad???

Yes, I practice for the test. We do sample problems together so they aren't lost and fearful. But.....I try hard to teach my students the way they learn! And, believe me, that's not test-taking practice
worksheets!!

I know (I'm positive!) our scores will not be great this year. I've spent a whole lot of time working on respect to others, kindness, and cooperative learning skills this year. I've had a real tough group. They needed this BEFORE they could learn all of the other concepts! I truly believe, though, that in the long run, that type of learning is much better than any test taking strategies I could have offered!!

Gosh, it feels so good to be able to express my feelings on this! I could NEVER, EVER do this with my colleagues at school! Just know, TeacherCarrie, you are not alone!!
