You can have a balance. Teaching only to the test is such a mistake because we are then teaching the kids that they don't have to think on their own. That their thinking is not valued. THat's the exact opposite of what
we want to do. On the other hand teaching only real life application all of the time implies there is no testing situation which we all know is the harsh reality of it all.

So, you can balance it. Give them those great lessons during the day and for homework give them test like questions that relate to the concept at hand. Or as a warm up every day, this is what I do, give them
a problem.

I agree, too, that if you tell your principal the truth about your teaching, without implicating the other 2 teachers, he/she can't help but support you!

Good luck! In the end, your kids will be smarter, better thinkers than the rest!
