Scared to sub/solutions
By evins

Clip to ScrapBook
I saw you said you are scared to sub.

I was the same way.

I subbed for the second time today and will
sub again tomorrow.

I haven't had any REALLY difficult problems that
I couldn't handle. Just simple sit down
and
threats to call parents if they don't act well, but I never
had to do it. They generally get in line.

I sub on the elem/middle school level. I was offered
for high school, but truth be told I need to get a feel
on the lower classes first.

The younger ones you can FOOL, they are more apt
to not want their parents to be called, names written
on board or a bad

report left for their teacher.

I am enjoying this and I must add I get a daily laugh.
They are too funny to me.

My suggestion is be FIRM, not overly friendly (an occasional smile
will do), state rules or write on board if you have additional ones and tell them the same rules apply as if their instructor were there.

Don't be afraid to ask other teachers for help. Get there early to review
the lesson plans. Have something prepared for them to do, just in case
the techer didn't leave anything

Move kids that talk too much to each other and disrupt class.
I like to get the talky (as if this is a word) ones to sit next to me.
I first use it as a threat and if to no avail, i do it.

You can pick out the ones that will help. Threaten to take recess,
go old school on them. I like to give (and I am very good at) the evil
eye and no words. It says a lot and some kids get that from their
parents.

I had one tell me I was looking at him like his mother looks at him.
I didn't tell him that it was the same look my mother gave me.

At the end of the day, I don't give out prizes I do commend them on
their conduct and today, for the 3rd graders I assigned them words
that best described their actions throughout the day and told them to look
them up and give the definition and put it in a sentence.

REMEMBER you are in CONTROL. If they see you have NO CONTROL,
SCARED or NERVOUS they will take advantage of that. Once you get over
that hump its EASY. remember YOU ARE THE ADULT.

MOST OF ALL KEEP THEM BUSY,BUSY.

hope this helps. Also check out websites.
hit me back if you need more info.

Say a prayer before you go also.
I always do.

Good luck.
