We're a walking school

Many schools in our district have students who are bused, but ours is one of a few that has not buses. Our students all live within the square mile and walk, bike, or are picked up in a vehicle. So we have school buses available for field trips and such. For the 10 years I taught Kdg., I required the parents/caregivers to come to the classroom to pick up the children. Our 1st and 2nd grade teachers are required to walk the children to the front pick up area and can see who picks the students up. Very few K-2 students walk home alone. Grades 3-8 are released an hour later and are generally left to their own devices.
