Pi Day
By jch

Clip to ScrapBook
My 6th graders will have finished studying ratios and proportions. I have the kids bring in any kind of object that is a circle (and having a center point helps - like a plastic lid off something like peanuts or coffee). We measure the circumference, we measure the diameter, and in every case the ratio is about 3:14:1. The kids are astounded. They've brought in cakes, tires, cookies - you name it! The food, obviously, is the biggest hit.

Check out www.piacrossamerica.org
www.teachpi.org is fun too.

I also do a simplified version of Buffon's toothpick experiment. My file is at school, but try and Google it.

We have such fun on Pi Day!:D
