Have Them Write a Note
By Shash821

Clip to ScrapBook
Since I teach science and have between 150 and 200 4th to 6th grade students, it was tough to get signed tests back the next day. I give a one day reprieve and remind them that if it is not in the next day,
they will need to stay in during lunchtime recess. While they are inside, I have a pretyped note posted on the SmartBoard, that they have to copy onto a sheet of paper, saying something to the effect of:

Dear Mom and Dad,
I am writing this note to help remind me that I need to get my recent Science Chapter Test signed. Ms. H. gave it back to me on ________ and as of today,
____________, I still have not remembered to return it to her.
I had to stay in from lunchtime recess today to write this note to you. Please sign my (attached, if it is in school, but not signed) test and also sign the bottom of this note so that Ms. H. knows that you have seen both.
Also, please talk to me about the importance of fulfilling my school responsibilities, so that I may have a successful year. Thank you.
Love, your child,
__________

After parents read that note from their child, I have almost 100% success with getting their test the next day. I have had many positive parent comments about this policy and it makes the students accountable for their own lack of timeliness.:)
