fraction circles
By Love3rdGrade

Clip to ScrapBook
I made several circles out of felt with different fractions on them and cut them out so the kids could manipulate them, compare, and order them. I just used the squares from the craft store and started out with all the same size circle. Then I used a black sharpie marker to draw the lines and cut on these lines. I labeled each piece. They can put the 2 halves on top of the whole, the 4 fourths on top of the whole, etc. They can actually see that 1/3 is bigger than the 1/4 because they can lay one on top of the other.
Get a parent helper to help you make a set of 3-4 so that the kids can work in groups. Give them a worksheet to complete while they are manipulating and then have them come up and demonstrate and defend one of their findings.
