I teach first grade and I use a timer for those students who have trouble staying on task. I show them how much I want done in 5 minutes and check on them when it goes off. Then I show them again what needs to be done and set the timer for another 5 minutes. I usually only have to do this at the beginning of the year.
I also use a timer to remind me to send kids to the nurse or special classes. I use my phone for that because I can set it for several different times and I don't have to reset it daily. Then I also use the timer for myself during my plan time. I'm always afraid I will get involved in working on something and not notice the time to go pick my kids up at specials.
