with the other posters. If you didn't see it, telling the principal is probably not the first choice. Talk to the teacher, ask what the circumstances were that led to the detention, then let her know what was said. Like tammynj wrote, check her reaction.

About the pulling the boy by the shirt - that could be simply to hold him back as he is trying to lunge, hit or push at someone else. I've had kids over the year that forget where they are and "go after" someone while standing in line. If I need to grab the shoulder or cuff of a shirt to get their attention, I'll do it. The kids know I would never hurt them, and by doing that, it keeps them from getting into further trouble.
