respect
By Peg

Clip to ScrapBook
Missy, I know it is hard when the kids are being disrespectful, but I don't think you should ever be disrespectful in return. Rise above that, and model the way you want them to behave to one another. You can be firm without being angry and vengeful. I explain to the students in the beginning of the year that I am strict about my rules, but that doesn't mean that I'm mean. I tell them that to discipline is to lead, and that's what I do.I try to connect with my students by telling them about myself and finding out about them. It sounds like you could use to do some classroom community building. Ruth Charney's book, Teaching Children to Care is excellent! I highly recommend it.
