    I'm a California teacher with the same problem. We use our textbooks to press flowers!

    Our district adopted FOSS
    which is all hands-on, inquiry based learning. It's expensive, but we were able to buy as one of the state adopted kits. The 4th grade electricity and magnetism is really good even if you could just get one.
    Also, worked for a curriculum developer and some of our units are available online. Feel free to take them and use them. Click on Resources, then Science Lending Kits. Scroll down to 4th grade and click on the ecosystems unit.

    I teach 2nd and use AIMS for Magnetism. It's geared more for primary grades but it's better than the text books. Hope this helps.
