    Protect the vowel!

I taught K-3 reading with another teacher and we taught the kids that we had to protect the vowel!

For example: hope, the "magic" e makes the vowel sound long instead of short like hop. If I did the same thing with dress, when I made it plural it would get the e there. The ss protects it cause the e's magic power only can go through one consonant. (that's also the explanation when we did hop with an ending so why hop survives with only one "p" and class needs two "s").

I don't know if that helps... I like the floss rule! :) Our kids liked to be protectors! Hehe.
