Vocabulary
By Becca4

Clip to ScrapBook
Research states that students have to hear/use a word at least 14 times before they actually understand that word, so I don't do a word a day.

We have 7 story words a week, and a reading first vocabulary program of
7 words for the week.

Things I do with vocabulary are:

Pictionary: Block off your paper (front and back to give nice sized blocks for words). Write each word in a block, write a sentence with the word, and draw a picture of the sentence.

Group Word Work Each table gets a word. They discuss it and how they can act it out for the class.

More Group Word Work:
Each group gets a different word. I give them an index card and it tells them what they are doing.
For example:
Word: responsible Make a list of ways you can be responsible.
Word: fleet Name as many animals as you can that are fleet.

Vocab Game: Words printed on cards, defintions printed on separate cards. Hand out all word and definition cards to individuals. Word Cards stand on one side of the room and Definition Cards on the other. Word Cards must got to their partner, but no one may speak. They can nod, shrug, shake their head to indicate whether they are a match or not. Then we go around the room, reading each, and deciding it they are a match or not.

Word Sets: Students have a set of word cards from the story. As I read the story aloud on the first day, they hold up the vocab. card when they hear it read in the story.

Tally Chart: We keep a tally chart, and when students hear someone say that word, they report it to the class, and we put a tally mark. They have to tell us how it was used, they can't just say, "so-n-so used the word enormous". You will be surprised how they really think of how they can use the word throughout the day just so we can count it!

Scenarios: Make up scenarios. Some of the scenarios will have to do with a vocab word and some won't. Have them decide it it does or not.

Here's an example of Scenarios:

1. SAY: The word is weary. If you think this has to do with being weary, lay your head on your desk. If not, say "I'm not tired!"

2. Read Scenario 1: The girl scouts spent the day out in the sun, walking around the neighborhood to sell their cookies.
Read Scenario 2: My dad always changes channels with the remote.
I ususally give 3 scenarios.
**I always have the action they do match the word if I can. If not, they could just clap, say yes, etc.

Hope you find something you can use!!
Rebecca
