Clip to ScrapBook
I teach reading and vocabulary. I choose 5 words per week that I think my kids need to know. I pull from 4th grade word lists, vocabulary instruction books, words they don't know that appear on our state assessments or words
associated with what we are learning about. They turn out to be mostly verbs and adjectives. I compose my own simple, concise definitions using www.dictionary.com. I post the weekly words on a poster and print out clip art pictures to go with each word.

Monday - introduce the words, part of speech and definition. We "squat" (the syllables)and "move" (act each word out in some
way).
(I usually choose the action. We practice the action all week.) Students write the words, part of speech and definition in their vocabulary journals and take a list home. (Journals are spirals cut in half.)

Tuesday - We "Squat and Move", complete a vocabulary activity sheet that I make, complete a word search or make flash cards.

Wednesday - We "Squat and Move", write sentences for our words, make posters or mini vocabulary books or complete another activity.

Thursday - "Squat and Move", play board races (teams relay to spell the words or write the definitions on the board. Sometimes we do a practice test with partners.

Friday - test. Students must spell all the words (vocabulary and definitions) correctly and give the part of speech (N,V,Adj,Adv)I also add 5 fill-in-the-blank sentences at the bottom where I try to give them an opportunity to practice using context clues to choose the correct word.

Students who fail are in spelling club the following week. They come in during lunch to complete some independent practice activities. If they make an 85 or above on that weeks test, they are out of spelling club.

Vocabulary Unplugged by Alana Morris is a great resource for activities. That is where I got the "Squat and Move" idea.

At the end of the week I print up letter sized posters with the word, definition and clip art to post on our word wall.
