sub ideas
By carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I subbed for six years. I am now a full-time teacher. I have some suggestions for you:

Primary - Grades K-2:

1. The kids are likely to tell you that this isn't the way Ms. So-and-So does it. They are so addicted to
her routine that they don't like the change a sub brings. You have to patiently explain the moment you introduce yourself that you are the sub for the day and that their teacher will return tomorrow. They may see you do things differently from their teacher, because you aren't there every day to watch how things are done by their teacher, so be prepared to address this early on, so that
you don't get aggravated by this as the day wears on. (It does get annoying to listen to after awhile.)
2. Even little kids will try to take advantage of you. I had heard things like: We aren't supposed to use the electric pencil sharpener. Mrs. Jones doesn't let us. Yet, even though they would NEVER, ever do this in her presence, they will try it while you are there.
3. Some little kids may cry when they see that you are there instead of their teacher. I always found a very high rate of "sickness" when I subbed in the primary grades.
4. The little ones are cute and sweet and full of energy. They are still capable of following rules, however, and should be expected to do so.
Be nice, but be firm.

Older kids in grades 3-5:
1. Are actually easier to sub for. They don't seem to mind having a sub, and they can take having a sub in their stride.
2. Will try to take advantage of you, just like the little ones.
3. You may find more problems with respect and attitude from the older ones.
4. Should definitely be expected to follow the rules--walk in a straight and quiet line down the hallway, etc.
5. Their teachers leave lesson plans which are easier to follow. Primary teachers tend to leave a "book" for you to read, because they want to explain every little detail of their day.
6. Are much less likely to tell you that you aren't their teacher's clone. LOL
