our school does something like it for grades 2-5. We have the STAR Reading and Accelerated Reader program. The children take the STAR test and then their ZPD is put on the back of their nametag. They may check out two books. One is to be an AR book within their ZPD. The other book is a "fun" book of their choice. The children go to the Media center once a week as a class. Then several mornings a week before school they may go to "open check-out" if they want a new book before their class goes back on the assigned day. Our school is a "high performing" school.
