In my school, most of us accompany our students to the library once or twice a week to choose books. Our students choose what they would like to read and then read a page to the teacher or librarian. That way, we do the "five finger test." If five errors are made on the page, the book is not an "independent read." We write it on a list of "someday I will read this book" along with the call number, and then the child returns it to the shelf and makes a different choice. It works great! Students have a goal of being able to read what is on their list "someday," and always have a book that is "just right" for their independent level!
