Let not your heart be so troubled. Contrary to popular belief, knowing how to select a book from a library and follow through by reading it is not a child's default setting. It is an acquired skill. High School students
who
are assigned to our library for study hall have taught me this
amazing fact. If they do not have an assigned task, they do not know
how to utilize time in the library. They are surrounded by books, magazines, and newspapers but claim "boredom."

According to extensive research by Renaissance Learning,
guided independent reading should be encouraged for at least
30 minutes every day. In our hectic, scheduled lives, many students do not experience that. Hardly anyone models that for them. A quiet time in a library set aside for reading...hmm, could be a unique and awesome experience that would teach them a life-long skill. They might know what to do when they are high school students asigned study hall in the library!!
