You brought back memories for my 8th grade - high school years in CCD. In 8th we were preparing for confirmation, so it wasn't too bad. I remember the best way the teacher kept our attention was discussion. I would limit the reading and doing worksheets and focus on discussion of the topic. Kids in the 8th grade have strong opinions on everything and love to debate.
