I think it's perfectly fine to type it as long as it's personal, not a generic thank you for the gift form letter. That is what I did this year. And I was able to say much more than I could have handwritten. I have terrible handwriting and carpal tunnel, so typing is much easier for me. I think you are still setting a good example if you type an individualized note to each person.:s)
