In my classroom, all students get work at their instructional level. I then assign a grade based upon the work they've done. I teach sixth. I may have a child who is working at a third grade level, but working HARD. I give that child the A or the B they've earned at their level, but I mark the report card as "modified curriculum" and then we have to also post a comment which tells parents what level their child is working on. We don't want parents to misunderstand and think that their child got an A for grade level work, if they aren't working at grade level.
I believe everyone that's doing | | their best should get the good grade, but when I report them to the state, they're "unsatisfactory" or maybe "partially proficient."
Standards and grades are not the same thing, never will be, and we should not try to make grades and standards attainment line up. If we do, we trash the lower learners. Can you imagine working your butt off, semester after semester, and never seeing anything but an F for your hard work? So I would say to you that you need to lobby to separate grades and standards in your school.
