Have you considered asking the kids what they would like? Maybe you could do this after you do a New Year Learning Goal. After they create a goal then you could say, "So what does our room need to look like for everyone to achieve their goal?"

This is my 3rd year in a 3-4 loop and every year, the kids say they like their own desk not touching anyone but close to someone incase they need them.
