making the calls for the district
By Doris

Clip to ScrapBook
I have been a school secretary, sub caller and now I have returned to school to become a teacher. While doing this, I sub part-time. One thing that I appreciate about the schools that I have subbed for is that the principals
either take the time to check in on the subs or come into the classroom to warn the students there had better not be any trouble for the sub. Also, when I was calling subs, I generally had an idea about what sort of discipline problems there were in that grade level or that particular class. This may be more difficult for you since you make the calls for the entire district, but
if the teacher calls you to request a sub, you may want to ask her if there is a nearby grade level teacher (who knows the students) who could be used as a contact or would even stop in to check on the sub. Most of the teachers on the grade level will take the time to be available for questions or discipline back-up. Give the name to the sub. This can be a big help if the sub has questions about rules, student behavior, etc.
