Silent Lunch
By Mysterywoman

Clip to ScrapBook
Our principal was going nuts because our lunchroom was so noisy. This year we have SILENT lunch. No talking, period. Each class has 30 minutes for lunch. The principal decided to have "lunch reward": not exactly recess, but
after the students eat, they can go outside for the remainder of the 30 minute period. If they talk during lunch, they don't get to go outside.

Students can stay in the lunchroom the whole 30 minutes if they want to. But they still can't talk. If parents come to have lunch with their student, they go up on the stage area so they can visit with their student.

Fourth grade
has lost their "lunch reward" most frequently because they just can't stop talking. If they can stay quiet in line, and quiet while eating, they can go outside for fifteen minutes or so after eating. It works pretty well. In bad weather, they go to the gym and have relay races or play with basketballs, etc. It allows them to let off some steam.

The old way, they were in the cafeteria for the whole 30 minutes, just sitting (and making lots of noise!)

Our school is very crowded this year because the district is constructing a new elementary school. So we're doing the best we can!
