    Metric Olympics

I still use a portion of an old AIMS activity called Metric Olympics for a culminating activity when I teach Metrics.

I set up various stations and these are the "events" that the students participate in:

Drinking Straw Javelin Throw-Students toss a drinking straw like a javelin and then measure in cm how far they threw it.

Paper Plate Discus Throw-Students toss a paper plate like a discus and then measure in meters the distance on it.

Strong Arm Grab-Students use the hand opposite from the hand they write with and then saturate a sponge with as much water as possible. Then, they squeeze out as much water as they can into an empty bowl. Afterwards, they measure how many ML of water they were able to collect in the empty bowl.

Heavy Weight Marble Grab-Once again, students use the hand opposite from their writing hand. Then, they reach into a bowl and grab as many marbles as they can. Afterwards, they mass in grams how many marbles they were able to grab.

Hope this gives you some ideas!
