My graduate action research project was on the effect of small-group reading vs. whole class. I used our Harcourt anthology whole-group for a period of time and then I taught it in small ability-based groups for a period of time and compared the results. It fit with what I was already doing in my classroom, it was easy to design, easy to assess, and easy to find research for.
